This past Saturday there was a free sake tasting by our friends @sakeshop. The featured sakes were Tamanohikari Junmai Daiginjo, Tamanohikari Yamahai Junmai Ginjo, Hakkaisan Tokubetsu Junmai, Jinyu Junmai Ginjo, and a sake slushie – Tamanohikari Mizore Junmai Ginjo.
Of course I had to be there to check it out! As usual Malcolm and Nadine were very informative and helpful. They started me off with the Jinyu Junmai Ginjo also known as 100 poems. I tried this sake before and if you are a regular sake drinker you will appreciate the smoothness and body of this sake. The @meetoworld crew previously did a review of this sake.
Next I tasted the Hakkaisan Tokubetsu Junmai. This is not the same Hakkaisan you get at restaurants like Shokudo. Although it has a very similar taste the Tokubetsu Junmai is a little heavier. Not as good as the one in restaurants but good enough if you are looking for Hakkaisan. Unfortunately the Hakkaisan served at some restaurants (Junmai Daiginjo) is not available at retailers here. Hopefully one day that will change.
I went on to taste Tamanohikari Junmai Daiginjo. This sake was really smooth. Some might even say too smooth. It does leave you with a hint of sweetness and dryness at the end. If you don’t like those rustic sakes, then this sake is one you should try. It will also appeal to beginner sake drinkers.
The Tamanohikari Yamahai Junmai Ginjo followed. I like Yamahai or “old school” type sake, so I was very interested in tasting this sake. This sake had an almost caramel like smell to me. It also had a lot of earthy flavors, but finished well on the palate. I thought this would go well with any hearty meat dish. This was definitely my favorite of the day.
I ended with the sake slushie – Tamanohikari Mizore Junmai Ginjo. This sake is placed in the freezer and then served slightly frozen like a slush drink. It is good but not one of my favorites I guess because I just don’t drink sake that way. However, I do think it would go well with salty dishes like broiled saba and a lot of people there liked it.
