This past Saturday there was a free sake tasting by our friends @sakeshop. The featured sakes were Narutotai Ginjo Nama Genshu, and Narutotai Daiginjo. As an added bonus the vice president of the company Motoko Matsuura was present at the tasting to pour the featured sakes.
The sakes are brewed by Honke Matsuura Brewery in Naruto, Tokushima. Established in 1804 this sake brewery practices the traditional Yamahai method. However what makes them even more unique is that they select each rice grain after the rice polishing. When rice is polished for sake there are still some imperfections in some of the grains of rice. This brewery goes through the tedious process of selecting the best grains of rice for sake brewing. Pretty crazy but that’s how they do it.
Back to the tasting! The first one I tried was the Narutotai Ginjo Nama Genshu. First off let me say it comes in a can, but don’t let that fool you. This was an easy drinking sake that was sweet but also heavy. It was almost a little too easy to drink for a sake that had 18.5% alcohol content. It will probably go well with seafood and foods with cream type sauces. Although it is sweet, it is full bodied and should hold up against most food dishes.
The other sake being sampled was the Narutotai Daiginjo. I thought this sake was flowery sweet with a bite of acidity. Normally I like sakes with a bite, but for some reason this sake did not appeal to me. I think because it has the aroma of muscat, a type of grape used for wine, it didn't really catch my attention. I’m not a big wine drinker. Now I know why my friend Ed liked this sake.
Both of these sakes can be purchased at The Sake Shop, just see Malcolm and Nadine there.
